A Parable Of Salvation Jim was walking along a road one night. He was well off the road on the sidewalk. As he traveled along unaware of the traffic going past him a car swerved recklessly off the road and headed straight toward him. A passerby, Mr. Loving seeing his danger knew that if someone didnt act the man would be killed. Mr. Loving was a business man who was leaving his office for the day. Though he was wearing his best suit he felt that he had to act. He ran to Jim and shoved him out of the path of the car seconds before it plowed into a building. As he did he was unable to avoid the car hitting him. He was seriously injured and lay there on the street. Several people saw what had happened and knew that if the business man hadnt acted the Jim would have been killed. They told him that his life was spared because Mr. Loving was willing to give his life to save him. As Jim contemplated what the business man had done for him he said to himself, "What he did for me is a free gift. Nothing I can do for him would repay him for what he has done for me so I wont hang around here. I might as well go on about my business." As he began to walk away someone came to him after the ambulance left with Mr. Loving to the hospital and told him that the business man had asked them to give Jim something. They then handed him a key and told him that it was the key to the Mr. Lovings business and said that he had asked that Jim lock up his shop for him. Jim said to the stranger that he didnt want it and said, "What he is asking me to do is just too much trouble and besides what he did for me was a free gift so I dont have to do anything for him." The stranger went on to say that Mr. Loving had offered Jim a job in his business. At that Jim became indignant and said, "That would be works! Im not going to do that!" He went on to explain that he couldnt do anything that Mr. Loving asked him to do because he had other plans. The stranger asked him if he would at least go visit Mr. Loving in the hospital. Jim said, "No I am not interested in doing that! I was saved once by Mr. Loving but now I want to get on with my own life. I have plans." How many of us, like Jim look on the infinite sacrifice Christ made for us with indifference? We say, "Im saved!" yet we feel no desire to love and follow the man that saved us. We have no desire to do anything for him. We think that since we cannot repay Him what he has done for us we therefore owe Him nothing and that He shouldnt even ask anything in return. If we REALLY have a since of what our salvation cost Him would we pass Him by with indifference? I dont think so. He died for us before we were even aware of our danger and he gave his life freely for us but does that gift draw you closer to Him? Or do you like Jim pass on as if nothing has happened? If another human were to save you like Mr. Loving did for Jim I am sure that you would feel such humility and overwhelming gratitude for what that person did you would gladly do what they ask. You would be happy to tell your friends, family, and everyone that would listen about what he had done. How sad that some people that are called Christians even act as though God would be insulted if we tried to return to him a token of our gratitude to Him. All heaven was given for them yet they seem to have no sense of appreciation for that sacrifice. As a parent wouldnt you feel good if your child came to you with a little present of some kind. Perhaps a picture that they had made of you. How much more God loves to see His children give him tokens of there love to Him. While it is true that our righteousness is as filthy rags that does not change how we should regard Gods love for us. Our righteousness that we attempt on our own is often filled with pride and self sufficiency but the gifts of love from a humble, sincere heart God is ever mindful of. Like the woman at the temple that put in her two mites our gifts are noted and appreciated by God. |
